Biography

Hortense was born in 1863. She is found on the 1871 Canada Census report as Hortense MacNichol, living with her maternal grandparents, Stephen Holmes and Elizabeth Chambers Holmes. Hortense's mother Jane Hannah Holmes is now married to Samuel Tucker with three small children. When Hortense was about age 17 she married Nelson McAleese, they had four children. While she was pregnant with the 4th child, Nelson died in Eastport. Hortense now a young widow with four children soon married Arthur Melville Farris in 1893. Arthur was born in 1865 and died in 1919. Nine months after her marriage to Arthur, Hortense died of TB in Eastport, Maine, where she is buried. The large McAleese family raised four children, Albion, Frances Belle, Howard Warden and Clara Irene.

Albion is my great grandfather and his sister Frances Belle is my great grandmother. Yes, first cousins, his son and her daughter married in the 1920s.
