James Harvey Symmonds is the son of John Henry Symmonds Jr. and Margaret "Peggy" Hoffman Symmonds. He was born in Ohio, moving west with his family--first to western Indiana where he married his first wife, Cassandra [alt Cassender] (Newman) Symmonds on March 14, 1844, in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. The couple and their older children moved further west arriving in Adams County, Illinois in 1845 in an ox-pulled wagon. James and Cassandra were the parents of nine children: Isaac, Mary Angeline, Sarah Jane, Malinda Anna, Loyal Firman, Evangilene, Benjamin F., Zeurah, and Ada. After Cassandra's death in 1865, James married Eliza Jane Clapper on January 24, 1867, in Adams County, Illinois. She gave birth to two children, Squire Alexander and Margaret, then died in 1869 at the age of 32. On December 20, 1874, James married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Thompson. Except for a brief time in Missouri, James Harvey and his family farmed in Hancock County, Illinois.[2]
There is evidence, through autosomal DNA tests, to support the relationship of James Harvey Symmonds to his decendants.
