Joseph Theodore Hawes was born about 1849, based on the 1850 Census, in Floyd County, Indiana.
He was a cabinet maker and upholsterer. His father died in 1873 and Joseph became the primary caregiver for his disabled brother, Isaac.
Joseph's family life is confusing and needs more work. We know he had at least two daughters: Catherine born c1871, and Gertrude, born c1878. But there are at least three different women associated with Joseph, apparently with marriage records for two of them. He may have married Katie Sweeney first. She was a milliner recorded in the household of Luther Hawes in 1870. A second marriage may have been to Mary E. Smith on 6 June 1874. A third marriage, to Anna Turner, on 8 March 1877, is also reported. In the 1880 Census, Joseph was married to Anna and she may be the mother of Gertrude.
The 1880 Census is the last record found. Some have written that he left town and was never heard from again.
