Biography

Birth in Palermo

Rosalia, or Rosina D'Agostino is the daughter of Ernesto D'Agostino and Rosina Fernandez, both born in Italy. The record of her marriage says she was born 16 August 1902 in Palermo.[1] The record of her petition to naturalize gives her birth date in 1903, and provides Rosa's middle name, Elenore.

On 9 April 2016, I reviewed the atti di nascita online for Palermo, August 1902, and did not find a civil birth announcement for Rosina D'Agostino.[2] I have also looked for her baptism in Borgetto, on 29 January 2017.[3] Online records for 1903 appear to be incomplete. Her birth does not appear in the only index available for that year. Cascio-10 15:21, 28 February 2018 (EST)

Immigration

Rosalia's family lives in New York City by the time she is a three. She and her mother make at least one return trip, preceded by several aborted attempts to sail from Palermo.

In 1906, Rosalia and her mother sail on the SS Napolitan Prince, leaving Palermo on 15 August. There is a bracket enclosing the names of Rosalia Fernandez, 20, Rosalia D'Agostino, 3, and Margherita D'Amico, 56, who in later records is identified as Rosalia Fernandez's mother. This record indicates that Rosalia Fernandez is married. Her mother, Margherita, is a widow. Fernandez's husband, her daughter's father, bought both their tickets, and Margherita's was bought by her sons.

Rosalia is going to join her husband, Ernesto D'Agostino, at 131 Elufsen St New York. Margherita is joining her sons, Alfonso, Agostino, and Antonio at the same address.[4] This is the trip that Rosalia reports as her immigration to the United States, when she becomes naturalized in 1941.

Based on her answers on the 1909 manifest, Rosalia and her mother remained in New York for two years, returning to Sicily in 1908. In December 1907, Rosalia's mother remarries to Giovanni Lepore, who appears in records as Luciano or Louis Lepore.

In 1909, they appear on at least four more ship manifests, each time with a line drawn through their names, indicating that they did not sail.

  1. Rosalia and her mother appear on the manifest of the SS Lazio sailing from Palermo 21 April 1909, and arriving at the Port of New York on 6 May 1909. They are going to join Rosaria's mother, Margherita, at 171 Spring St. Rosaria is 23, widowed, a dressmaker, and her daughter is four. She has a sister, Melchiora Fernandez, living in Palermo. Rosaria has been in New York before, from 1906-1908. She can read and write. She is 5'2" with a rosy complexion, chestnut hair. There are lines drawn through both their names, indicating they did not sail.[5]
  2. Rosalia and her mother attempt to sail a week later, on the SS Sanio, sailing from Napoli on 29 April 1909, and arriving in the Port of New York on 14 May. Once again, there are lines through their names, indicating they did not sail. On this manifest, her mother's name looks like Margherita d'Orrenco, and the address, 145 Thompson St.[6]
  3. Rosalia and her mother appear on the manifest of the Duca di Genova, which arrived in New York on 1 July 1909. Their names are crossed out.[7]
  4. Almost two months later, they are on the manifest of the Duca di Genova, departing Napoli and arriving at the Port of New York on 30 August 1909. They are going to meet Margherita. There are lines through both their names.[8]

It's not yet known when Rosalia makes it back to New York. Her naturalization record excludes her and her mothers' trip back to Sicily in 1908, so it does not give the date of her return.

Rosalia may appear as "Lucy" in the 1910 census, living with her grandmother, mother, and aunts.

In the 1910 federal census of New York City, taken 18 April, Margarita Fernandez, 56 (b. 1854), heads a household at 101 West Houston St. She has been married for 36 years, had 12 children, of whom six are living. At home are her daughters Rosaria, 34 (b. 1876), Lucy, 6 (b. 1904), Angelina, 18 (b. 1892), and Rose, 22 (b. 1888), all single, and a sister, Lucy Augustini, 26 (b. 1884), a widow who has had one child, still living. All members of the household were born in Italy and emigrated in 1906. Rosaria, Angelina, and Rose are operators in a corset factory.[9]

Her mother and her new husband live in Newark, New Jersey, and have children. Rosalia does not appear in census records living with them. Her grandmother's 1920 census appearance has not been found. Cascio-10 03:35, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Based on her given address in 1921, when she marries, Rosalia is living in the East Village, near Tompkins Square Park, a few blocks from Giuseppe Longo. Reviews of the enumeration districts matching their addresses in 1921 have not yielded the households of Rosalia or her future husband. Cascio-10 11:59, 10 April 2016 (EDT) (Rosalia's ED in 1920 would be ED 615.[10])

Marriage and Children

A search of the NYC Grooms Index shows that Giuseppe Longo and Rosa D'Agostino marry on January 17, 1921.[11] My cousin, Justine, confirms that our great-grandmother's name was Rose D'Agostino. [12]

Rosina marries Giuseppe Longo before a Deputy City Clerk in the Municipal Building, 137 East 30th St, on 17 January 1921. At the time of their marriage, Giuseppe Longo lives at 420 East 11th St, and Rosina D'Agostino lives at 441 East 9th St in Manhattan, a couple blocks away. The witnesses names are Waterman and Douglas, so they are not family.[13]

Giuseppe is 24 (b. 1897), a bricklayer by profession, was born in Capaci, according to their marriage record,[1] but in Cefalù, according to his registration for the draft in WWII.

Rosina and Giuseppe have two known children, Dorothy (1922) and Alice (1929).

Dorothy is born 22 August 1922 in Brooklyn, according to the certificate of her marriage registration. Her mother's naturalization record gives her birthplace in Manhattan.

According to Rosina's naturalization records, Alice is born on 18 January 1929 in New York City.

In the 1930 federal census of Brooklyn, NY, taken 18 April, Joseph Longo (“Lango”), 34 (b. 1896), heads a household at 69 Bay 14th St. with his wife, Rose, 26 (b. 1904), and children Dorothy, 7 (b. 1923), and Alice, 1 yr 3 mos. (b. Jan 1929) Joseph and Rose were born in Italy and their daughters in New York. They married when he was 25 and she was 17. He emigrated in 1910 and she in 1905. Both are alien residents. Joseph works in construction as a bricklayer’s helper.[14]

Dorothy marries Paul Cascio in Manhattan on 20 April 1941. Dorothy works as a clerk. The witnesses are Paul's brother and sister, Joseph and Mary.[15]

Rosalia Longo declares her intention to become a naturalized citizen of the US. She lives at 215 E. 107th St., NYC. She is 37 years old, born 16 August 1903 in Palermo. She is a dress operator. She is married to Joseph: they married on 11 September 1921. He resides at the same address. They have two children, both born and residing in NYC: Dorothy, born 22 August 1922, and Alice, born 18 January 1929.

Rosalia last lived in Italy in Palermo and departed there, arriving 30 August 1906 on the SS Napolitan Prince. She sailed under her maiden name, Rosalia D’Agostino. She declared her intention to naturalize on 10 December 1936 in New York. Sworn 23 July 1941.[16]

Rosalia Elenore Longo, residing at 2075 - 2nd Av., New York, NY, age 40, becomes a naturalized citizen on 25 April 1944.[17]

It's notable that Rosalia is alone making petition to become naturalized, and not her husband. Of interest: marriages between 1907-22 stripped US citizenship from women who married foreign nationals.[18]

In the 1950 federal census of New York County, New York, taken 6 April, Paul Cascio, 28 (b. 1922), heads a household at 225 East 105th St. Apt #9, with his wife, Dorothy, 27 (b. 1923), and sons Luis, 6 (b. 1944), and Robert, born in February (b. 1950). All were born in New York. Paul is a grinder in a glass factory.

At the same address in apartment #15, Rose Longo, 43 (b. 1907), separated, born in Italy, lives alone. She is a machine operator in a dress factory.[19]

Rose and Joseph divorce in 1951 in Dade County, Florida. It is believed that Joseph resides with their daughter, Alice, until his death in 1960.

Death of Rose

Rose Longo, born 19 August 1903, dies at age 67 in October 1970. Her last residence is in Brooklyn, NY 11214. (The Bath Beach neighborhood, near Bensonhurst, Fort Hamilton, and Gravesend.)[20]
