Richard Hendee ... [1] "Richard Hendee was one of the first proprietors of Killingworth, Conn. In 1689 He purchased Land in Joshuas's Tract. He settled their as early as 1691 in 1692 he was granted the privilege of building a dam and Saw mill on Beaver Brook, also a half mile of land adjoining for Timber and Pasture. Richard Hendee, Sr.] , was born about 1665 . He went to live in the family of his grandfather, John Elderkin (b. 1616) , and became an inhabitant of Norwich [Connecticut]. His sister Hannah married, January 14, 1685 , Samuel Belding, of Wethersfield. In 1691 he [Ensign Richard Hendee] and others from Norwich settled at “Joshua 's purchase,” Windham, Connecticut, and he had a house built there, on what was called the Hither Place, on the north side of Old Windham street. [Ensign Richard] Hendee bought his land of Captain James Fitch, and was then unmarried. [Ensign Richard Hendee married Sarah Smith about 2 years later in 1693.] “Joshua's tract” was named for the son of Uncas, the Indian sachem, and the land was granted to Norwich men.
Hendee was one of those granted the mill privilege of Beaver Brook, Windham. He was on the list of admitted inhabitants, May 30, 1693. A new pound [enclosure for wandering livestock] was ordered built at the southeast corner of his lot in 1698. . . . the settlers came in rapidly and in 1691 the inhabitants petitioned the General Court for a town grant, Joshua Ripley, John Cates, Jonathan Crane, Joseph Huntington, William Backus, Jeremiah Ripley, Jonathan Ginnings, Richard Hendee, John Backus and John Larabee being signers to the petition. The names have been familiar to the inhabitants of the town to this day. These petitioners were all residents of the Center.” [1]
