Biography

The following is quoted from of a 1939 letter written by Mrs. George L. Corbin, 3 Oak Lane, Hampton Gardens, and Richmond, Virginia to Mildred Keeling, Keeling, Virginia, online at this Davis family page of Pittsylvania County:

"I told you that Mary McGehee married Ayres Hodnett and came to Halifax to live. They had six children: Ayres, Jim, Sallie, John, Will and Lucy. [The author left out Benjamin]. One of them, Lucy, married Joseph Davis; I found a copy of the marriage certificate of Joseph Davis and Lucy Hodnett which was dated March 19, 1793.... The names of their children were as follows: Garret, Joe, Ben, Tom, Jack, William, Polly, James and Elizabeth.

Winifred (Yeaman) Davis was born 9 Aug 1804 in Pittsylvania County, VA, a daughter of John Yeaman II (1768-1852) & his wife Mary (Williams) Yeaman. Winifred married 22 Dec 1823 (bond date) in Pittsylvania Co., Va. to Benjamin Davis. They were listed in the 1830 census of Pittsylvania County, Va., with what appeared to be 4 sons born prior to 1830."[1]

The following information comes from a 2002 forum post by James A. Davis:

"All the Davises who migrated from Pittsylvania and Halifax County, ca 1833 settled close to each other on the then McNairy and Madison County line. The area they all lived in later became Chester County when that county was created some 40 + years later."

Benjamin Davis apparently died within the year before the 1850 census was taken. [This apparently comes from the 1850 mortality schedule.] Benjamin's widow Winnie Davis appears in the 1850 census in McNairy County, Tennessee, age 46, b. Virginia, with Henry Davis, 23, b. Va.; Joseph, 21, b. Va.; Presley, 19, b. Va.; Martha, 17, b. Va.; Mary, 15, b. Va.; Sarah, 13, b. Tenn.; Rebecca, 10, b. Tenn.; Elijah, 4; William, 4; Nancy, 2.

Winnie Davis, wife of B. Davis, was buried at Henderson Cemetery in Chester Co., Tenn.; b. 1804, d. 19 Feb. 1888.
