John was born 8 March 1642/3.[1][2] He learned his father's trade of blacksmith and worked in Wethersfield and Killingworth. On 25 Oct 1669 he joined in contract to settle in Middletown "and do the Town's work of smithing for seven years." They joined the church in middletown 5 Sept 1675.
He was very successful and became a large landholder. After becoming a freeman in 1671, he held the office and title of Sargent among the citizen soldiers.
John Hurlbut married Mary Deming b. 1655, daughter of John and Honor (Treat) Deming of Wethersfield on 15 Dec 1670. [3][4]
Sergeant John Hurlburt2 (Thomas1), was a blacksmith. At age of twenty-seven he entered into contract, Oct. 25, 1669, with the settlers of Middletown to locate there and "do the Town's work of smithing for seven years." He became a large landowner and prominent in Middletown; freeman, 1761; sergeant; m. Dec. 15, 1670, Mary Deming, dau of John Deming and Honor Treat of Wethersfield. He d. Aug. 30, 1690.[citation needed]
Death and Legacy
He passed away in 1690. Town records date it as 30 April 1690 and Probate Court dates it as 30 Aug 1690 at age forty-eight. He left no will but the inventory of his property was presented 9 Sept 1690 and his widow Mary along with Captain Nathaniel White were appointed to administer. But because Mary was pregnant with an unborn heir the court order that "there shall be no distribution now made." The property was later divided on 19 June 1696. [6]
