Biography

Abigail was born in 1769. She was the daughter of Moses Perkins and Mary Smith. She passed away in 1815. [1]

("Mrs. Eliza Wright Scott", author: The Rev Augustine Caldwell, 1890, 19 pages, excerpted here): "To her grandmother, [Mrs Abigail (Perkins) Miles]. Mrs. Scott owed more, it may be, than to any other, in the influences of her young life. The old lady was evidently very sensible. She appreciated the information that could be gathered from books. She had a perception that Mrs. Scott had excellent mental powers, and encouraged her to develop them. And not only was her influence thus felt, but her natural gifts made her to be a pillar of strength to the entire settlement. She had a wonderful vocal ability, and no music which was familiar to her day, baffled her. Her treble reveled among the notes and bars, and such was the strength of it that she was heard in song a mile away through the clear summer atmospheres of our hills.------that Voice of Song, Abigail Miles has bequeathed to four generations. Her son, Burrage Miles, was our earliest chorister. He sang a remarkably clear counter; while his brother Moses, (who did not however sit with the choir) sang a low rich base. There has never been a year since the organization of the Parish, that Abigail Miles or her descendants have not been the leading voices in the praises of the Sanctuary. This grandmother joined our church in 1808, and was gathered home in 1826, having tarried so long that she leaned on her staff in her cheerful old age. She would way as she visited her children's different homes, 'Well, I live to see you once again.' "
