Doris married Horace Havemeyer from the sugar refining family. Like the other Havemeyer's they were avid art collectors.
The candlesticks shown at the right were made by Edward Winslow. He was one of the very first American silversmiths. They were part of the estate of Doris' brother Adolph. She and her husband purchased them at his estate auction in 1956. After she died, they were a bequest to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1983.
