Biography

Sarah Usher, daughter of Hezekiah Usher and his first wife Frances (Unk) was born at Boston, Massachusetts on September 11, 1650 [1] and baptized there on November 17, 1650. [2]

Sarah married Jonathan Tyng in 1669. Her husband was born in Boston on December 15, 1642, the son of General Edward and Mary Tyng. [2] [1] [3]

Her father Hezekiah Sr., in his will written on May 11, 1676, names among his heirs:

  • daughter Sarah Tyng
  • her husband Jonathan Tyng
  • grandchildren John and Mary Tyng [1]

In Jonathan's father Edward Tyng's will, dated August 25, 1677, he left legacies to all his grandchildren and the only Tyng grandchild mentioned is John. [4]

Jonathan's mother relict widow Mary Tynge wrote her will on December 12, 1700, indicating all the legacies left by her husband Edward to the children and grandchildren be honored. She left legacies to:

  • only surviving son Major Jonathan Tyng, executor - her diamond ring
  • grandchildren Edward, Jonathan, Mary and Elizabeth, children of son Edward, deceased, when they reach majority [5]

Sarah died on February 8, 1713/4. [6] [1] [3] She is buried in the First Burial Ground at Woburn, Massachusetts where her inscription reads: Here lyes ye body of Mrs Sarah Tyng wife to Colnl Jonathan Tyng Esq Deceased February Ye 28 1713/14 in Ye 69 Year of Her Age [7]

Jonathan Tyng died at Dunstable on January 19, 1724 aged 81. [6] [1] [3]

His will was written on February 16, 1721/2. Among his bequests he explains that after the death of his son John, he intended to leave his estate equally to sons Eleazer and William, but due to the death of William, he has made changes to his legacies to include Williams three children. His bequests were to:

  • wife Judith
  • son Eleazer, executor
  • grandchildren Jonathan, Sarah and Benjamin, children of son of Eleazer
  • grandchildren - John, Sarah and Mary, three children of my son William
  • the Church of Woburn
  • Hannah Fox [8]

In November, 1788, Honorable John Tyng petitioned the court to administer the remainder of the estate, indicating the Eleazer Tyng, several years deceased had not completed the remaining distributions, and that he, John Tyng and Mrs. Sarah Winslow, daughter of Eleazer Tyng, were the only surviving heirs to Jonathan Tyng's estate. Sarah (Usher) Tyng died in Woburn, most likely on February 28, 1713-14. While the Woburn Town record cites "Feb. 8, 1714," this was probably derived from Nathan Wyman's 1847 cemetery survey which cites: "Tyng, Sarah w of Col. Jonathan Esq, Feb 8 1713-14 69y."[11] But Samuel Sewall wrote about attending her funeral soon after her death, "March 4, 1713-14, went to Woburn to attend the funeral of Aunt Tyng, being his second wife. Died on the Sabbath day morning of fever." Sarah was buried at the First Burial Ground in Woburn, where her gravestone : Woburn Records: VOLUME II. EPITAPHS, FIRST BURIAL-GROUND. Pages 16*-17*. Sarah (Usher) Tyng, daughter of Hezekiah Usher, a prominent merchant of Boston, and wife of Col. Jonathan Tyng (epitaph 83).
March 4, 1713-14, went to Woburn to attend the funeral of Aunt Tyng, being his second wife. Died on the Sabbath day morning of fever. Waited upon the governor and lady there; had given me a pair of gloves. She was about 69 years. (Vol. II., page 298, Letter-Book of Samuel Sewall. Samuel Sewall, Jr.'s, Memoranda, Mass. Hist. Coll., 6th Series, Vol. II.)"
