Biography

When Francis Morton Howes was born on June 28, 1840, in Chatham, Massachusetts, his parents Kimball Howes, was 36 and Barbara Crowell, was 33. Francis married Catherine Ryder Doane on January 2, 1862. During their marriage they would have four children Herbert Morton, Mabel H, Grace C and Mildred B. Francis started his career at age 11 in summers he would work on ships and winter go to school. Four years later Francis accepted a position with the Merchant and Miners Transport Company on the steamer The Joseph Whitney. His entire career with exception of two years were spent with the Merchant and Miners Transport Company. Under the training of his brother Solomon Howes and Captain Hallet. Frances was promoted and took his first command of the McCellan (formerly the Joseph Whitney) at age 26. Frances became the youngest Captain and the oldest Captain to work for the the Merchant and Miners Transport Company. Francis held the position of Senior Captain Commander for 10 years a position his brother formerly had before him. Francis was a Freemason with the John Abbott lodge in Summerville Massachusetts, F.A.A.M, Knights of Honor, Royal Arcanum, and Pilgrim Fathers . Francis died He died on May 3, 1919, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 78, and was buried in Union Cemetery, Chatham, Massachusetts. ^[1]
