May have served in Brnchs Regiment during the War of 1812. Joseph Cloud was one of the names listed of men recruited from Claiborne County, TN. along with Yelverton, James, and Fielding Carpenter, believed to be brother's of Jane Carpenter his wife.

Will 11 Aug 1823  ?Further evidence that Joseph Cloud made a will is contained in court minutes of Claiborne Co., TN (Nov 1821-Dec 1824, p 354.). Yelverton Carpenter and Benjamin Cloud came in Open Court 22 Jun 1824 and made oaths they were two subscribing witnesses who saw Joseph Cloud sign, seal and declare it to be his last will and testament. They said he was of sound and disposing memory at the time he executed his will. It is believed Benjamin Cloud was a brother of Joseph and Yelverton Carpenter was a brother of Jane. It was common practice for a member of each side of the family to witness wills.

Died Aft 11 Aug 1823  ?From court minutes, we have now pinpointed that Joseph CLOUD died sometime between 11 Aug; 11 Nov 1823 and that is was, in fact, he who owned Clouds Ferry. From the Early Settlers clips, it said, The Pioneer CLOUD of Clouds Ferry came from Va to Clouds Ferry on Clinch River, which is five miles east of Howards Quarter, at a very early date; Imogene.Bennett-at-att.net Josephs death left Jane a widow with eight children, the youngest only 2 years old.

Family ID F29791 Notes  ?The pioneer Cloud of Clouds Ferry came from Virginia to Clouds Ferry on Clinch River, which is five miles east of Howards Quarter, at a very early day. He married Jane Carpenter. Info from P.G. Fulkerson Papers: 23 Jul 1980. Imogene Bennett wrote: ;All those brothers (Calvin, Greenberry, William Henry) who came to Taney, Stone, Christian Co MO, as well as their sister, Malinda who married James MITCHELL, were the ones who belonged to Joseph CLOUD; Jane CARPENTER. Their sister, Elizabeth who married John DEVAULT, remained in Claiborne Co. One sister, Mary (Polly), who married Joel or Joseph MILLS (records vary as to his given name), died in Hancock Co TN and her husband remarried. Some of the children of the MILLS marriage got to Taney, Stone, ; Christian Co MO. And some kids of another brother (Burrell) also got to the area. There are tons of descendants of all those people in southwest; It is not known if our Joseph Cloud is the same as the one who joined the Big Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Claiborne Co TN. Included in the minutes of that church the 4th Saturday in August 1802, “Church met at War Creek and after worship proceeded to business. 1st Opened a door for new members and received by experience Joseph Cloud.” There were several other members received that same day which included Hardy Mills. Joseph Cloud may have served in the War of 1812 in Bunchs Regiment. There was one by the name listed in that regiment which may have been our Joseph. This regiment consisted of men recruited partly from Claiborne Co TN and other names included were Yelverton, James, and Fielding Carpenter, believed to be brothers of Jane Carpenter. 11 Nov [tab] 1822 -- Joseph Cloud was appointed overseer of the road leading from Michael Pearson's Still House to the ;said Clouds ferry; on Clinch River. 1823 -- Joseph Cloud died between August 11 and November 11, 1823, leaving Jane a widow with eight children, the youngest only 2 years old. 11 Aug 1823 -- Joseph Cloud made his will in Claiborne County 11 Aug 1823. Nearly 20 years later, Jane was selling land on the north side of the Clinch River. In the deed, she said she held the land “by virtue of the will of her said husband, Joseph Cloud, dec;d, dated the 11th day of August 1823.” 11 Nov 1823 -- Joseph Cloud was deceased by 11 Nov 1823 when the Claiborne County Court ordered Henry Grabner to be appointed in the place of Joseph Cloud, deceased. Mr. Grabner was ordered to have the same work hands as Joseph Cloud had when he was first appointed the previous year. 22 Jun [tab] 1824 -- Further evidence that Joseph Cloud made a will is contained in court minutes of Claiborne Co TN. Yelverton Carpenter and Benjamin Cloud came into Open Court 22 Jun 1824 and made oaths they were two subscribing witnesses who saw Joseph Cloud sign, seal, and declare it to be his last will and testament. They said he was of sound and disposing memory at the time he executed his will. It is believed Benjamin Cloud was a brother of Joseph and Yelverton Carpenter was a brother of Jane. Susan, I apologize for not answering your message the other day about Jane CARPENTER. I am in Houston now and will be for another week or so. I had meant to try to dig out my thoughts regarding Jane although away from my records, then put it aside and forgot until your message just received. I still believe Jane was a sister of Yelverton, James, and Jesse. Most believe Stephen was father of them and also father of Fielding. Yelverton did name a son Stephen Anderson CARPENTER and Fielding had son named Stephen. Yelverton was a witness of the will of Joseph CLOUD as was his brother Benjamin CLOUD. You know the old theory, a witness from each side of the famil y. However, there are a lot of IF's for her being a daughter. IF the marriage of Stephen to Rebecca COLLINS fits, then I dont see how Jane could be d/o Rebecca. Then there is the IF Stephen had a second marriage to a younger Rebecca. Then the IF Jans;s age was correct in the 1850 Claiborne mortality census. She might have been older than we thought and perhaps Rebecca could have mothered her. This much I know for sure, his wife when he was in Franklin Co GA ; Hawkins Co TN was named Rebecca. IF the marriage to Rebecca COLLINS in Pennsylvania even fits for the Stephen who was in 1790 Wilkes Co NC where most of his kids got married, one to Hardy MILLS, one to Dixon NAIL ER, and I forget the others. Then IF it was our Joseph CLOUD who served in Bunchs Regiment in the War of 1812, others serving in that regiment (made up of men partly from Claiborne Co) were Yelverton CARPENTER, James CARPENTER, and Fielding CARPENTER. And IF it was our Joseph who joined Big Springs Church in Aug 1802, Hardy MILLS also joined that day. So, the bottom line is – I still carry Stephen as Janes likely father with a big IF. Someone is going to have to provide proof that is not so. Hildas birthday is October 17 and I believe it was 1921. Im pretty sure she w as born the same year Rexs parents were married. As for my family information, Rex Carl BENNETT was b 1 May 1930 Greene Co MO; d 19 Jan 2005 Christian Co MO, bur Wade Chapel. We (Doris Imogene TRUE) were married 1 Jun 1952 in Hood Methodist Church in Republic. My parents were William Albert TRUE; Edith Clara FRY. His parents were Carl Herman BENNETT & Juanita Pauline WADE, d/o Ira Clarence WADE & Alice Viola GREEN. You might want to tell Elizabeth that Rexs sister, Helen, is now going through radiation and chemo treatments. Helen used to take Elizabeth down to the cemetery at decoration time. Again, I apologize for the oversight in answering your first message. Imogene Imogene.Bennett@att.net ;javascript:WriteMailPopUp(;Imogene.Bennett@att.net;); P.S. By the way I just thought of this, Stephen Anderson CARPENTERs first wife was Nancy MITCHELL and I am quite sure she was a sister of our James MITCHELL, they being children of John MITCHELL; Ara SPRADLING. The vines get so tangled!!! Top of Form 5
