Biography

Elizabeth Hodgeman's, birth was recorded at Reading, Massachusetts [1]daughter of Thomas Hodgeman and Abigail Geary was[1] and her baptism was at Wakefield, Massachusetts on April 24, 1715. [2]

While residing at Concord, Massachusetts, Elizabeth's intentions to marry Joseph Newhall were published at Lynn, Massachusestts on November 19, 1738. [3] The marriage took place at Concord on May 30, 1739. [4]

Her father Thomas died intestate and in the settlement of his estate July 13, 1742, the court divided the land among widow Abigail and the elder sons, indicating those heirs would pay their siblings, including Elizabeth Newhall, from their portions. [5]

When her husband Joseph died unexpectedly of fever, Elizabeth parceled out her children: Abigail stayed with her mother; Jedidiah, Thomas and Joshua were given to Benjamin Newhall; Martha & Elizabeth were given to Robert Mansfield. No mention is made of the others.

On December 31, 1756, Elizabeth was granted administration of husband Joseph's estate, who died intestate. [6]

Administration of her mother Abigail (Geary/Hodgeman) Buss's estate was granted to Dr. Joseph Lee November 26, 1757. Dr. Lee indicated to the court, that two of the children, being Josiah Hodgman of Concord and widow Elizabeth Newhall of Danvers, , had taken and converted to their own use, certain parcels of land and personal items of Abigail's estate 'without any order of law or equity'. On January 9, 1758, the court ordered that Josiah Hodgman and Elizabeth Newhall appear before the court to be interrogated. Elizabeth indicated that she had indeed taken her mother's wearing apparel.
