Biography

Erskine "Erk" Fulkerson was born on November 11,1883 in Smallhous/Centertown, Kentucky in Ohio County. His parents were Noah Davis Fulkerson and Bettie (Withrow) Fulkerson. Erk was one of seven children born to Noah and Bettie and was a middle child. On the 1900 Census, he is listed as living with his parents Noah D. Fulkerson and Mary E. Fulkerson (Bettie Withrow), alongside his brothers and sisters Ray, Lewis V., Alice, John W., and William H. His father and two older brothers are listed as Farmer and Farm Laborer, respectively. Erk is listed as not having a profession, and appears to still be in school.

He remained in Ohio County, where he met and married Leila Hunter on April 2, 1907. It appears that they went to Tennesee (Robertson County - just across the border) to get married. Erk would have been 23 at the time, but Leila was only 19 at the time, which should have been perfectly legal in either state. It is not known why they went to Tennesse to get married.

On the 1910 Census, Erk and Leila are listed as living in Ohio County with his Father-In-Law and Mother-In-Law, S.T. Hunter and Eddie Hunter. Erk's profession is shown as Farmer. Erk and Leila had two children, Owen Davis (born in 1912) and Ida (born in 1915). By September 12, 1918, Erk registered for the WWI draft (at the age of 34) and was listed as a Farmer with blue eyes, dark hair, tall with medium build, and living in RFD1 in Centertown, Ohio County, Kentucky.

By the 1920 Census, S.T Hunter had passed away (in 1912) and apparently Eddie no longer lived with them. Erk and Leila M. are listed as living with their two children Owen D and Ida in Point Pleasant, Ohio County, Kentucky. Erk is still listed as a Farmer by profession. In 1922, Erskine bought the ferry that carried travelers from the southern end of Livermore across the Green and Rough rivers to the south bank where they could then make their way towards Island, South Carrollton, and Central City. By the 1930 Census, Erk is shown alongside his wife "Mrs. Erk" and his children Owen and Ida E plus "Mrs. Seth Hunter" has moved back in with them. His profession is now ferryman. Erk ran the ferry over the river near Livermore for many years before a bridge was built in 1940 that eliminated the need.[1] By the 1940 Census, Erk and Leila were living alone in Ohio County, Kentucky, and he was listed as an "Operator" for 8+ years for the Service Station. He passed away on May 16, 1964 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Livermore, Kentucky.
