Martha Benjamin was not the Martha who married John Seeley. The Seeley Genealogical Society says "John married Martha Benjamin, about 1707 a daughter of Caleb and Mary Hale Benjamin."[1] Donald Lines Jacobus & Edgar Francis Waterman, however, say Martha Benjamin was living unmarried in 1706 with her uncle, Lieut. Samuel Hale, and in 1718 with Capt. [Samuel] Welles, and that "poor Martha was not very bright". pp. 10, 11. Further, Martha Benjamin would have been 51 at the birth of David Seeley, which is implausible. John Seeley's will, in May 2, 1740 named his wife Martha, all his children, and Ruth's daughter Abigail Hamblin.
