Biography

Mary Cover Hassall was born on 12th December 1799 at Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia. She was the eldest daughter of Rowland Hassall and Elizabeth Hancox.[1]

She married Reverend Walter Lawry on 22nd November 1819 in St John's Church of England, Parramatta.[2] The ceremony was a triple celebration with three of the Hassall children marrying: Samuel to Lucy Mileham, Jonathan to Mary Rouse and Mary to Walter Lawry.[3]

In 1821-22 they lived in Tonga as missionaries, before moving to England. Mary passed away on 24th December 1825 in Cornwall; fifteen days after delivering their third child. She was survived by her husband, who later re-married, their son and two daughters.

Margaret Reeson has provided a very readable account of the life of Mary (Hassall) Lawry, in her book, "Currency Lass" (Published in 1985 by Albatross Books). Margaret Reeson was the wife of a Methodist Minister, the Rev Ron Reeson, and has used extensive extracts and quotations from original letters and other documents, now held in the Mitchell Library, in Sydney.
