Biography

Birth: Cynthia E Hoyt was born on 1 January 1876 in Pittston, Maine. She was the daughter of Joseph A (Morang) Hoyt Jr. and Julia A (Rhodes) (Hoyt) Stickney. [1] [2] [3]

In the 1880 census, Cynthietta (age 4) is living with her parents and siblings in Augusta, Kennebec, Maine, United States. [4]

Marriage to William Stickney: Cynthia appears to have married William H. Stickney around 1890. [5] [6] [7]

Children: found for Cynthia and William. [5]

  • Mary E Stickney, born 7 Mar 1893 in Augusta, Maine. She died on 3 Mar 1905 a few weeks befoe her twelth birthday. [6] [7]
  • Leander Stickney, born 3 Jul 1896 in Augusta, Maine. [8]
  • Delia "G" Stickney, born 4 Feb 1899 in Augusta Maine. Delia "M" Stickney, died 10 Feb 1900 of hydrocephalus at 1 year and 6 days in Chelsea, Maine. The death record has her birth place recorded as "Chelsea (Augusta)." [9] [10]

In the 1900 census, Cyntha (age 25), husband William H Stickney (50) and their two surviving children are renting a home on Stone Street in Augusta, Maine which is not a farmer, but her husand is a farm laborer. Daughter Mary, has not been attending, school. [5]

Marriage to John Stickney: Cynthia E Stickney (age 30) married John W Stickney (age 30) on 4 December 1905 in Whitefield, Maine. The marriage is recorded in Augusta, Maine where they are both residing. Cynthia is divorced and has been working as a domestic. This is John's first marriage. He was born in Somerville, Maine. He is the son of Abrahm Stickney who was born in Auguata, Maine. Abraham was deceased by the time of John's marriage. John's mother Rosanna Stearns was born in Somerville and living in Augusta at the time of John's marriage. [3]

In 1910 census "Etta" and John are living on mud mill road. Leadner is the correct age to be the son of Cynthia and William Stickney, but is listed as "son" to head of household, husband John. [11]

1910 United States Federal Census: Augusta Ward 6, Kennebec, Maine, United States
Name Sex Age Status Relation Occupation Birth Place
John Stickney M 28 Married Head Farmer-owner operator Maine
Etta Stickney F 28 Married Wife Maine
Leander Stickney M 15 Single Son Maine
Viola Stickney F 1 and 9/12 Single Niece Maine
Benjamin C Stickney M 57 Widowed Brother Maine

About 1918, Residence: 6 Cont Street in Augusta, Maine. Cynthia is listed as contact on husband John's US World War I Draft Registration. [12]

In the 1920 census, Cynthia and John are renting a home at 6 Cony Street in Augusta, Maine. Based on the house and family numbers it appears that Grace (age 13) and Voila Dill (age 11) are listed as stepdaughters. [13]

Burial: Cynthia is mentioned in two separate Find a Grave memorial pages which have similiar information. They both indicate she was born in 1875 and passed away in 1923. They both contain the same photograph.

-One page inidcates she is bured in the Mud Mill Cemetery in Augusta. It has specific date of birth of 1 Jan 1875 (exactly one year earlier than her birth record); and indicates that she was born in Pittston, Maine and passed away in Augusta, Maine. This page is connected to family members who are reported to be buried in the same cemetery: husbands William H Stickney and John W Stickney; and daughters Delia and Mary Stickney. None of the other family pages have photographs attached. [14]
-The other Find A Grave page indicates she is buried in the Maston Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Maine. The page has her name spelled "Cynthae." Though this page has the same photograph as the Mud Mill Cemetery page, this photograph, seen here, is slighlty clearer and does appear to be engraved Cynthae. The biography section indicates her stone is inscribed "wife of John W." which would be correct. This Maston Cemetery page indicates she passed away in Mount Vernon, Maine. It is not connected to any family members. A search of the this cemetery has two memorials (with no photographs) for a John W Stickney, This is Cynthia's husband's name, but the dates on those pages do not match John's birth and death dates. There is a page for an Abraham Stickney (husband John's father's name) attached to Maston Cemetery with no date, There are duplicate pages for a Rosanna (Stearns) Stickney with dates that do match husband John's mother's records. There is a page for a Delia Stickney, but the dates are different from Cynthia's daughter. None of the these or other burials attached to Maston Cemetery have a photograph attached. [15]

Research Notes

  • Marriage record is required for Cynthia Etta Hoyt and William H Stickney. Neither a marriage record nor intentions have been found. The marriage and date is based on vital records of children, the 1900 Census, and Find a Grave.
  • Record of death is required.
  • Original birth record would add confidence. Record found is "Copy of Old Record" and references "Hoit" above the name Hoyt. [1]
  • See Cynthia Etta Hoyt at FamilySearch Person: LVJL-S2S.
  • Is it possible Cynthia's ex-husband married Cynthia's mother? Cynthia's first husband William H Stickney marries a woman named Julia (Rhodes) (Hoyt) Stickney in 1906 and they are living together in Chelsea, Maine at the time of the 1910 Census. This woman has the same full name and is the correct age to be Cynthia's mother. Cynthia's mother's birth place is neither listed on Cynthia's birth record nor her parents' marriage record. However, several of Cynthia's siblings have vital records which record her mother's birth place as Whitefield, Maine. See Cynthia's mother at Julia FamilySearch Person: LVRX-LPS where this connection appears to be made. Cynthia's husband William H Stickney is FamilySearch Person: GDRC-D5R. [16] [17] [1] [2] [18]
  • The 1910 and 1920 Census are labeled with specific relationahips for those living in Cynthia's household where husband John is head of household. Due to the possibility of enumerator error on the census and the possibility of conflation in research found on FamilySearch and Ancestery, further documentaion is required. For 1910: Viola Stickney, niece, born about 1908 and Benajmin Stickney, brother, born about 1857. For 1920: Grace Dill, stepdaughter, born about 1907 and Viola Dill, stepdaughter born about 1909. Cynthia appears to have a sister Julia Hoyt born about 1885 who married James Dill, had a daughter named Grace Dill born about 1907 which is a name and date match for Grace Dill on the 1920 Census, but that would make Grace a niece and not a stepdaughter. Grace's birth record is given by deposition in 1922 by Cynthia's husband John W Stickney. Sister Julia (Hoyt) Dill died in 1908, but their is no record that she had a daughter Viola Dill. As the relaionships of these individuals are not in agreement, it is mere conjecture that they may be related in anyway to those found in Cynthia's home on the 1910 and 1920 Census. See Cynthia's husband John W Stickney at FamilySearch Person: LZT2-WH1. See Cynthia's sister Julia Hoyt as FamilySearch Person: LCF4-C7D. [11] [13] [19] [20]
  • FamilySearch connect's Cynthia's first husband William Harrison Stickney (FamilySearch Person: GDRC-D5R) and her second husband John W Stickney (FamilySearch Person: LZT2-WH1) as first cousins, both descendents of Benjamin Stickney (FamilySearch Person: M6D3-8SP). This requires further research.
  • Find a Grave pages are detailed in biography section for research purposes as they are the only possible reference to Cynthia's death found. They are not meant to convey confidence in date and place of death or burial.
  • See notes on Cynthia's father Joseph A (Morang) Hoyt Jr's, profile. It contains details about the fact her father and parents and paternal grandparents' legally changed their last name from Morang to Hoit or Hoyt.
  • See changes tab for details on when family and source attachments were made. Records and relationships attached to FamilySearch ID also require furhter vetting before confidence can be ascertained.
