Biography

Capt Eliphalet Whittlesey was the son of Eliphalet and Dorothy Chester Whittlesey was a prosperous farmer, proven military leader, and esteemed public servant.

Mr. Eliphalet Whittlesey was commissioned by the General Assembly on the 13th of October, 1748, to be Ensign of the 10th company or trainband in the 6th Regiment of the Colony of Connecticut. On the 9th of May, 1751, was commissioned Lieutenant of the same company and regiment. Wednesday, Mar. 7, 1756, he was appointed and commissioned Captain of the 6th Company in the 4th Regiment. Feb. 9, 1757, was commissioned Captain of the 10th Company in the 6th Regiment, raised in this colony. March, 1758, commissioned Captain of the 4th Company in the 1st Regiment under Phineas Lyman, Colonel; 1759, Captain of the 5th Company 1st Regiment; 1760, Captain of 5th Company and 1st Regiment. The pay of Captain at that time was £6. In 1760, when Eliphalet Whittlesey was appointed, he was placed at the head of a company which was raised on the call for twentyfive hundred men for Maj. Gen. William Shirley's command, to operate at Crown Point and Iroquois Lake, New York Colony. Captain Eliphalet participated in the battles and remained in service during the war. In the campaign of 1757, which resulted in the surrender of Ft. William Henry to Montcalm's forces, Captain Whittlesey had the command of a picked company of one hundred men, most of which were from Wethersfield, CT, 1758, Fort Edward , NY Colony was the base of operations and Ticonderoga the objective point. He was always in the thickest of the battles at the head ofhis companies, which inspired his men to such fighting as can only be done when they are led by the bravest of officers.

Dorothy Kellogg, the wife of Captain Eliphalet Whittlesey, was the daughter of *Capt. Martin Kellogg, born in 1685.

1761 Capt Whittlesey removed to Washington, Kent County, Connecticut joined the Congregational church and was voted Deacon there. 1775, He was appointed member of the general assembly from Kent, created by the Governor to protect the citizens and to suppply the Continental soldiers.
