Biography

Mary was Cherokee.

Mary America Schrimsher was born on 9 October 1839 in the Tahlequah District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, daughter of Martin Mathew Schrimsher (~1806–1865), a white man of Dutch ancestry, and Elizabeth Hunt Gunter (1804–1877), half Cherokee by blood.[1]

Mary (18) married Clement Vann Rogers (18) in 1858 in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (what is now Ft Gibson, OK). Their children were:

  1. Elizabeth Rogers (1861–1861)
  2. Sarah Clementine Rogers (1863–1943)
  3. Robert Martin Rogers (1866–~1883)
  4. Maude Ethel Rogers (1869–1925)
  5. Mae Mary Rogers (1873–1909)
  6. Zoe Rogers (1876–1876)
  7. Homer Rogers (1878–1878)
  8. William Penn Adair Rogers (1879–1935)[2][3]

She died from typhoid fever on 28 May 1890 mostly likely at the family's Dog Iron Ranch near Oologah in the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation. She was 50 years old when she passed. She is buried in Chelsea Cemetery in Chelsea, Oklahoma.[4]

Research Notes

Mary has a memorial at Chelsea Cemetery, but a book by Betty (Blake) Rogers (1879-1944) states that she and her son, Robert, were buried on the family's Dog Iron Ranch near Oologah. "Mary Rogers died and was buried on the ranch beside her son Robert, in the little family cemetery with its twisted cedars and crape-myrtle bushes enclosed within an old-fashioned iron fence."[5]

So, were their graves moved to Chelsea Cemetery at a later time, perhaps when the dam for Oologah Lake was built?
