John McAllister Schofield (September 29, 1831 – March 4, 1906) was an American soldier who held major commands during the American Civil War. He later served as U.S. Secretary of War and Commanding General of the United States Army.
Schofield was born in Gerry, New York. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1853.
Awarded the Medal of Honor (July 2, 1892) for the Battle of Wilson's Creek (Missouri) August 10, 1861. He was superintendent of the United States Military Academy from1876 to 1881. From 1888 until his retirement in 1895, Schofield was commanding general of the United States Army.
General Schofield died at St. Augustine, Florida on March 4, 1906, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
