Biography

George Gifford was the eldest son of John Gifford of Weston-under-Edge, Gloucestershire and Ithell, Hampshire. George Gifford inherited the manors of Ithell (Hampshire) and Weston-under-Edge and Norton (Gloucestershire), and the farm of Sheverton, in Pickering, Wiltshire.

"Weston-under-edge, a parish in England, in Gloucestershire, 2 miles W. by N. of Chipping Campden." [Edinburgh Gazetteer (1822)]

"George Gifford. . . is usually said to have married Eleanor Brydges. . . stepdaughter of Sir William Knollys, younger brother to Henry Knollys and Lettice Devereaux. However, it was his namesake, the recusant George Gifford [Giffard] of Chillington, who married [Eleanor] Brydges. . ."

Edmund Bruges, or Bridges, died 11 Sept. 1572 and by will left his daughter Eleanor 2000 pounds. "Eleanor [Brydges], married after his Decease to George Gifford, of Chillington, in Com. Staff. Esq;"

George Gifford, or Giffard, of Chillington, Staffordshire, was the husband of Eleanor Brydges (or Bruges), to whom he was related (via the Throckmortons).

What is the source for the refutation of the marriage of George Gifford to Eleanor Brydges? It is still widely quoted.
