George Gifford was the eldest son of John Gifford of Weston-under-Edge, Gloucestershire and Ithell, Hampshire. George Gifford inherited the manors of Ithell (Hampshire) and Weston-under-Edge and Norton (Gloucestershire), and the farm of Sheverton, in Pickering, Wiltshire.

"George Gifford. . . is usually said to have married Eleanor Brydges. . . stepdaughter of Sir William Knollys, younger brother to Henry Knollys and Lettice Devereaux. However, it was his namesake, the recusant George Gifford [Giffard] of Chillington, who married [Eleanor] Brydges. . ."
Edmund Bruges, or Bridges, died 11 Sept. 1572 and by will left his daughter Eleanor 2000 pounds. "Eleanor [Brydges], married after his Decease to George Gifford, of Chillington, in Com. Staff. Esq;"
