Biography

Mary (Kerr) Brodie is a member of Clan Kerr.

James Brodie m. (28.07.1659) Mary Ker (b 28.03.1640, d 03.1708, dau of Sir William Ker of Ancrum, Earl of Lothian) The Innes 3rd Baronet married Lady Margaret Kerr, through whom Sir James Innes, the 6th Baronet, succeeded to the Dukedom of Roxburgh

In the early days of their marriage James and Mary lived in England. She was unhappy with her father in law as he records in his diary:

"My brother told me, that my daughter-in-law said, that my anger at the compts broght on and was the caus of my son's last sicknes. This is heavi. Lord ! piti me, and cleans, and tri my hart, and pardon. This was som burthen to me. Lord ! teach me to bear it patientli, and soberli, and humbli. I had thoghts of withdrauing from them to England or to Edinburgh. But is this taking up a croce and following Thee ? Oh noe ! Lord giu me not up to my oun spirit, or counsel, or passion."

Lady Mary Ker (1640-1708) was born at the time of religious troubles in Scotland. Reaching adulthood at the time of the Restoration of 1660, she was brought to trial for her convenanting views.

… When Mary’s husband James took over Alexander’s diary in 1680 he frequently commented on his concerns about Mary. By then forty years old, her health was poor and her religious habits continued to court danger. This period of history is known as the ‘Killing Times’ because of the violent persecution of the covenanters. James Brodie showed caution in the practice of his religion, but Mary was less judicious.
