William Bentley was a Congregational minister in Salem, Massachusetts from 1783 until 1819. He was a remarkable individual. He kept diaries; the following are diary entries that reference Robert. <Cathryn's note: I've expanded his abbreviations to make the text more readable.>

October 16, 1796[1]
... Elizabeth Bartlet & her Husband, death of Sister Newton, prayer for Sons at Sea. In my absence died Ruth Newton, aet. 70, not of my society, but at death. ...
January 25, 1797[2]
... This day was buried Robert Bartlet. A man of fine constitution, but miserable in his manners & connections. Strangers have often amused themselves while in Town in hearing his Street Cries. One of them has been applied to him since his death, "I have sold all, & am going home." He has sold all, & gone home. A notice to his Customers to speak for clams, muscles, pearch, & River Fish, next time.
