Earl of Thanet 5 August 1628 - July 1, 1631 |
Successor John Tufton, 2nd Earl of Thanet |
Nicholas Tufton was born on 19 January 1577/78 at Terling, Essex, England, the son of Sir John Tufton, 1st Bt. and his wife, Christian Browne. [1] He was educated at Hart Hall, Oxford and Inner Temple. [2]
Nicholas first entered Parliament as Member for Peterborough in 1601. He probably owed his seat to his father-in-law, Thomas Cecil, Earl of Exeter. He had married Lady Frances Cecil, daughter of Thomas and his wife, Dorothy Neville, with a settlement dated 18 January 1601. Together they had four sons and eight daughters. [3] Nicholas was knighted at Newcastle on 13 April 1603.
He was created 1st Earl of the Isle of Thanet, co. Kent [England] on 5 August 1628.
Nicholas died on 1 July 1631 at age 53 at Sapcote, Leicestershire, England and was buried at Rainham in Kent. [4] He was succeeded in the Earldom by his son, John.
