Biography

Robert Fernald was born in 1821, according to his grave marker, possibly in Exeter, Maine,^[1] or possibly in New Hampshire.^[2] His age of 35 on the 1860 U.S. census record suggests a birth date of 1825.

He married Janet Stetson (also known as Jennette, Jeannette, or Eliza) in Shutesbury, Massachusetts, on 18 April 1852.^[3][4]According to their marriage record, Robert was a farmer. The record names her parents, but the space for his parents was left blank. ^[5] Robert and Janet resided in Exeter, Maine.

Robert and Janet (Stetson) Fernald had four children:^[6]

His gravestone shows that he died in 1890. He definitely died before June 1900, when the U.S. Census identified his wife Janette Fernald as a widow.^[7]
