Biography

Wilmot Bridgham was born in Charleston, Maine on November 12, 1817, the oldest of seven children.

In 1840, he appeared to be living with his parents in Charleston.

Wilmot Bridgham and Hannah Brackett Schoppe were married on July 19, 1841, in Jonesboro, Maine. She was born December 1, 1820, in Jonesboro. She was the daughter of John and Elsie (or Sophia) (Weston) Schoppe.

Wilmot Bridgham and others were sued in February 1843 in Washington Co. District Court for debt.

In 1850, Wilmot Bridgham of Marion, Maine ran a farm of 10 improved acres and 40 unimproved acres. The farm had a cash value of $400, and the implements and machinery were worth $15. He had 1 milch [sic] cow, 2 working oxen, all valued at $20.

Wilmot was the town clerk of Beddington, Maine in 1854 and 1855. He was named the postmaster of a new post office at South Beddington in 1855.

In 1860, Wilmot Bridgham of Beddington, Maine was a post-master with real estate worth $500, and a personal estate worth $75. His household included his wife Annah, and their children, Leverett, Phebe, Sarah, Eliza, Louisa, and Joseph. All the children except Joseph were attending school. He ran a farm of 12 improved acres and 40 unimproved acres. The farm had a cash value of $500, and the implements and machinery were worth $10. He had 2 milch [sic] cows, 1 other cattle, and 1 swine, all valued at $75.

In 1870, Willmot [sic] Bridgham of Beddington was an oar and handspike maker, with real estate worth $1,000 and a personal estate worth $200. Included in his household were his children, Maggie, Frances, Louis, and Ozias. The three younger children were attending school. He ran a farm of 15 improved acres, and 35 unimproved acres. The farm had a cash value of $600. He had 1 horse, 2 milch [sic] cows, 2 working oxen, and 8 sheep, all valued at $325. His farm produced 24 pounds of wool, 3 bushels of peas and beans, and 40 bushels of Irish potatoes. He also produced 150 pounds of butter, and 10 tons of hay. The estimated value of all farm production was $360.

Oddly, there are agriculture census reports for Wilmot, the farmer, in 1850, 1860, and 1870, but not in 1880, the only population census year in which he stated that he was a farmer.

By 1880, they had moved to Jonesboro, Maine, where he was a farmer, and he had cataracts. Included in his household were their daughter, Louisa, who worked in a cotton factory; and son, Ozias, a mariner at sea. They were a separate family unit but were living in the same household (dwelling) as 85-year-old Fanny Shoppee [sic] and her family, probably relatives of Wilmot’s wife.

Wilmot Bridgham died on April 17, 1882, in Jonesboro at the age of 64.

Hannah (Schoppe) Bridgham died of “old age” on February 16, 1902, in Jonesboro, at the age of 79.
