re -<span id="Bartlett" />Bartlett, Genevieve Wilson. Forefathers and descendants of Willard & Genevieve Wilson Bartlett and of allied families, Moulton, McGehee, Endress. (Saint Louis, Missouri, 1952)., p. 64..."Abigail Disborough, dau. of Nicholas Disborough of Hartford, who [Nicholas] in 1671 was granted 50 acres of land for service in the Pequot War. Abigail married Wm. Gould of Milford and New Milford, CT." [This reference was copied by Arlynn Gantz in 1985 and forwarded to me so I don't have the information stating the relationship between Abigail and the author. No sources listed either.]

This last reference is the only one I've seen stating that William Gould/Gold was of Milford AND New Milford. There may be something to check there. I wonder if anyone has or could check old wills in that area for our Mr. Gould/Gold?

Now as for Abigail being a daughter of Nicholas Disborough of Hartford I've done some checking in records I have collected relating to Nicholas. It seems that old Nick DID have a daughter named Abigail according to several sources (he also had four other daughters named Phebe, Mary, Hannah and Sarah). Abigail was born 1 Feb. 1648/9 in Hartford to Nicholas and his first wife Mary (Brownson/Bronson). According to various sources Abigail married (1st) Robert Flood; and (2nd) 12 Jan. 1692/3, Matthew Barnes/Barnard/Barry (the sources being consistent as to her first husband's name, but not so as to her second's, although more than one source list it as Barnes).

When Nicholas Disbrowe died in 1683, an inventory was taken of his estate. His children were listed as follows: Obadiah Spencer's wife [Mary], Samuel Eglestone's wife [Sarah], John Kelly's wife [should be Kelsey - and there is some question as to whether his wife was Phebe or Hannah, but I won't go into that here], and Robert Flood's wife [Abigail]. The names in brackets were added by me and were not in the original papers. I took this data from a work entitled, "Digest of the Early Conn. Probate Records" by Manwaring, Vol. IV, p. 298, which was copied for me by someone whose name I didn't record.

I have found a list of Abigail's children by her first husband Robert Flood, and it includes seven names, born from 1670 through 1685. I can give these names to whoever may be interested, but will not include them here because of relevance. According to this family group sheet, Robert Flood "settled in 1677 on land in Rocky Hill ground by town." This according to my source, Lorraine Whiting's family research (unreferenced). "Town" was Wethersfield, CT, where Robert Flood died 16 Dec. 1689. This date does correspond neatly with the date of Abigail's remarriage to Matthew Barnes in 1692/3, allowing for a proper time of grieving.

As for Barnes, I have no other information on him.

SO - that leaves us with the big question: Was this Abigail Disborough/Flood/Barnes the same Abigail Disborough who married in 1706 to William Gould/Gold? If so, she would have been (having been born in 1649) about 56/57 years old at the time. How old was William Gould? And why was Abigail's name recorded in the vitals as DISBOROUGH and not BARNES? Was it common to record a bride's maiden name even if she was a widow? These are questions I cannot answer now, but might be revealed with some further research.

I looked through the first seven volumes of Broderbund's World Family Tree (which I own on CD-roms) to see if I could come up with anything on a William Gould/Gold of the proper time period. I only found one and here is the data on him: (From WFT Vol. 5, pedigree #3653): William Gould, estimated birth between 1661-1698 (quite a wide window!); married 11 June 1718 as the second husband of Abigail Farrington (born 1676 Branford, CT; died 25 May 1725 Branford, CT). Abigail Farrington's first husband was Benjamin Farrington, and this record doesn't make clear whether Abigail was a Farrington by birth or only by marriage. I would guess the latter because of the fact that Benjamin Farrington's parents are named in this record, but Abigail's are not. I checked a map to see if Branford (where Abigail Farrington was born) was far from Milford (our William Gould's home). Although both towns are in New Haven County, they are about 14 miles apart, as the crow flies, on opposite sides of the city of New Haven. NEW Milford (where Gould supposedly removed) is located in Litchfield County, about 16 miles n. of Danbury. My guess is that the William Gould of this record is NOT the same man as married Abigail Disborough in Milford in 1706, but if anyone wants to follow up on it they are welcome to prove me wrong!

For now my tendency is to believe that Abigail (Disborough) Gould was probably NOT a daughter of our Thomas of Fairfield. I guess I'd have to say my principle reason for thinking this is the fact that she was not named in Thomas' probate papers. Of course, if I'm wrong and she actually WAS Thomas' daughter, there could be several possible reasons for her not being listed. For one, there could have been a family "rift" (something to do with the witchcraft trials of Mercy, perhaps?) and she was "disowned"; or perhaps she just moved away on her own and Thomas lost track of her. Unless something like the latter happened, I would think that Abigail would have been mentioned somewhere in the probate papers, but there was not even a whisper of her.

Abigail was the daughter of Thomas and Mercy (Holbridge) Disbrow

Abigail married William Gould on 28 Nov 1706 at Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut Colony - parents of William, Ann, Job, Abigail, Samuel and Mary Gould
