There are many different spellings of Robert Claflin's last name in the various records of the time, most with the Scottish prefix Mac or Mc, which was dropped in New England. He was born in Scotland about 1639 (source needed), and arrived in Massachusetts, presumably between 1650 and 1661. Various passenger lists during that period show a Robert Claflin arriving in 1652 and 1661 and a Robert MacClaflin arriving in 1661.[1] The name Robert M'Lachlan appears on a list of Scottish prisoners from the Battle of Dunbar, who were deported on the ship Unity in late 1650 to Charlestown, Mass.[2] He settled in Wenham, Essex, Massachusetts, and married Joanna Warner there on 14 Oct 1664.[3] They had 8 children. He died in Wenham before 1690.[4]

I am glad to see that the merge of Claflin/MacLachlan kept the 779 as anyone related to Robert will eventually reach Robert thru 779. Robert is also my 8th great-grandfather and I do appreciate all the work done for this apparently good man. If you have not gone any further in the tree, please do so as you will be surprised.
Mackclaflin-1 and Claflin-779 appear to represent the same person because: Same person with many different spellings. Per Wikitree policy, the simple Claflin name should be used going forward.
Mackclothlan-1 and Claflin-779 appear to represent the same person because: Already approved to merge the two, but it should be merged into the current Claflin name, by WikiTree policy.
Claflin-779 and Mackclothlan-1 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly the same person, although very different spellings. Same wife and children. The only question is whether to keep the Scottish spelling or revert to the spelling adopted by subsequent generations. I favor keeping the original spellings with appropriate notes. Robert is my 8th ggrandfather, descending through Claflin's to Balcom's to Hunt's to Howe's..
