"He was one of the 'powers that be' in local politics, although never an office holder. He and four other men decided that John F. Fitzgerald (grandfather of President Kennedy) should run for public office, thus starting Mr. Fitzgerald on his long political career."[3]
"A deeply spiritual man, his inner life actuated many of his decisions: e.g., when Superintendant of the mechanical department of a successful New York daily, he 'pied' an article which was detrimental to the Blessed Virgin. Immediately after publication (boiler plate material was substituted for the 'pied' insert), he submitted his resignation, explaining that he was of no use to his employer, as he had sabotaged his employer because of a higher loyalty. He decided to return to Boston and, on the train to Boston, he met a friend who told of his plans to establish a newspaper in Charlestown and who offered him a half-interest in it. A year later he was in full charge." [4]

1900 census lists 2 servants in home: Margaret Sullivan + Margeret [??] -- both female; M.S. born May 1870 in Ireland & M. ? born 1883 in Ireland. Margaret (Maggie or Mary) was buried in the Flanagan family plot.
Judge Charles S. Sullivan of the Charlestown District Court remembered being told by his stepfather, "that's John Flanagan, a completely happy man... He was happy in his profession, his friends, his family, and his God." [7]
