Biography

Aaron was a Friend (Quaker)

Aaron was born on 6 Dec 1740 in New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut. He was the son of Gideon Benedict and Dorothy (Prindle) Benedict.

He was received on request at the Oblong monthly meeting on 16d 8m 1759 [16 Aug 1759].[1] Three months later, on 29d 11m 1759 [29 Nov 1759], he married Elizabeth Knowles at New Milford.[2]

He was granted a certificate, along with his family, to the Danby monthly meeting, on 14d 9m 1785 [14 Sep 1785].[3] Among the family were Aaron and Elizabeth, along with their children Cyrus, William, Silvester, Anne, Elizabeth and Hannah.[3]

In a 1798 tax assessment, he was noted as owning 158 acres by the road joining John Phillips. He was assessed at $30 for a 30x20 one log barn and a log house.

Aaron and Elizabeth, along with several other family members, were granted certificates to the Short Creek monthly meeting in Ohio in 1812.[4]

He died on 25 Jul 1816 in Bennington, Morrow, Ohio. He was buried in Alum Creek Friends Cemetery.[5]

Research Notes

  • Quaker Calendar - There has been much confusion over the dates in Quaker records. Friends used numbered months and days rather than what they considered pagan names for them (i.e. "Thursday" coming from "Thor's Day"). Thus, when the secular calendar was changed in 1752, making January the first month instead of March, Friends began calling January "First Month".
