Frederick Magalska was born April 24, 1858 in Marienwerder, Germany (Map, today known as Kwidzyn, Poland) to David Magalska and Juliane Papke as the eldest of six children, two boys and four girls.
Immigration
Frederick emigrated from Germany at age 13 aboard the Smidt with his parents and five siblings April 4, 1872. They embarked from Bremen, Germany and immigrated through Castle Gardens, New York.
Occupation
According to the 1880 Census, Frederick was working at a tobacco factory at age 22. He also was a foreman for the tobacco company in Detroit, Scotten & Dillon and for Yankee Girl Chewing Tobacco Co. He made the first mixture of tobacco for Yankee Girl.[1]
Family
Frederick married Albertina Buckenheizer, also from Germany, before 1882 in the First German Lutheran Church on 23rd and Ash Street in Detroit, Michigan. Together they had 13 children, ten of whom survived. In order from oldest (top) to youngest:

Death
Frederick died at age 58 on February 27, 1916 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. He died of acute anemia with exhaustion caused by cirrhosis of the liver. He lived at 119 Williams at the time of death. The funeral services were held through Christ Christ, United Church of Christ in Detroit, Michigan. His burial was March 1, 1916, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, Woodmere Cemetery, Section R, Lot 78.
