In the Civil War, he served in Company H., 8th. Maine Volunteer Infantry. It was organized Sept., 07, 1861at Augusta, and left the state Sept., 10., sent to Hilton Head, and Port Royal S.C.,on Nov., 03, 1861. On Feb., 14, 1862, 5 companies were ordered to Dawfuski Island, S.C., companies D,E,F,H & I were the most exposed men during the bombardment of Ft., Pulaski. A large group including Ezeckiel died of illness probably due to exposure. The military record from Augusta is confusing stating that he enlisted on Sept., 22, 1862. Burial was at Beaufort National Cemetery, Section 19, Grave #153 (later renumbered 1685), South Carolina. He left behind a wife and 9 children. He was named after his maternal great grandfather, Ezekiel Hinckley.
