Biography

Marie Ursule Raiche was born about 1877 in Quebec, Canada. She was the second oldest child of Antoine Raiche and Marie Garon's 12 children. Marie emigrated with her parents and siblings to the United States where they settled in Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts.

Marie Ursule married Nicolas Bernier on 10 October 1898 in Fall River, Massachusetts.^[1] The original wooden frame building of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church had been destroyed by fire on 12 November 1893 and a new church of stone was under construction at the time of Marie Ursule and Nicolas' marriage. However, the basement of the new building had been completed and was being used for Sunday masses. It is likely that the wedding was held there in the presence of family and friends.^[2]

After the wedding, Marie Ursule and Nicolas 's home became a center for socializing for the young people in their families. The couple were instrumental in introducing Marie Ursule's younger sister, Cecile Raiche and Nicolas's cousin, Damase Bernier to each other. Damase and Cecile wed on 25 April 1904... also in the church basement.^[3]

The first of Marie Ursule and Nicolas' children arrived in 1899. Together they had 11 children: Yvonne Bernier (1899), Bernier (1902), Anita Bernier (1904), Ovila Bernier (1905), Eva Bernier (1907), Infant Bernier (1907) a stillborn child , Annette Bernier (1910), Concorde Bernier (1911), Henriette Bernier (1913) a daughter who passed away before her first birthday, Henry Bernier (1917), and Henriette Bernier (1918) two children named in memory of their deceased sister.^{[4][5][6][7][8][9][10]}

Marie Ursule Raiche Bernier passed away on 19 July 1951 in Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts. She was laid to rest beside her infant daughters, the unnamed infant and Henriette, at Notre Dame Cemetery also in Fall River.^[11]
