Biography

Anne was born in 1785. She was the daughter of Abraham Wellman and Rebecca Pearson. She passed away in 1812.[1]

Anne married Bunker Clark, son of Bunker and Dorothy (Chandler) Clark, 29 Nov 1801 at Belgrade, Franklin, ME - their children were Nancy, Dorothy and Matilda (Anne died at the birth of Matilda or shortly after)

Research Notes

She is mentioned, though not by name, in Martha Ballard's diary. Martha Ballard was a well-known and respected midwife in Hallowell, Maine. She kept a daily diary from 1785-1812 which includes her calls as a midwife. The entry for 31 March 1785 reads:

Calld about Day to go to mr Wellmans. Ephm Cowen went with us as far as ye plain beyond Esqr Howards Bridge, where we mett a mesage Enforming ye woman was got Safe to Bed. turnd about & Returnd home. I had two falls; one on my way there, ye other on my Return. Ye Storm Continues yet; the snow is Levil with ye top of the lower Pain of glass of our north window. I travild Some Rods in the snow where it was almost as high as my waist. Stopt at mr Suels & warmd. Cowen got Colo Howards Sleigh & brought me from mr Suels. Got home at 8 o Clock. (transcribed) - in the margins, along with the date, is noted "Birth. Welmans child. X Datr. [Daughter] XX [fee received]"[2]
