Note: According to Eli's great-granddaughter, Clara B. Whitted Johnson, Eli died when his son Levi was 10 years old, after which Levi went to live with his uncle, Joel Braddish, near Erie, PA. There is an Eli Montgomery buried in Conneaut, OH (which is right next to Erie, PA) who, according to the tombstone, died on 15 Oct 1822 (when Levi was 12). I have listed that tombstone and death date as Eli's, but it may be a different Eli.

If the two Eli's are in fact the same man, it raises more questions. There is a Robert Montgomery buried right next to Eli in Conneaut, who died the same day (15 Oct 1822). According to W.J. Montgomery's Montgomery Genealogy, this Robert Montgomery is Eli's father.

This raises a number of possibilities (pure conjecture):

• Was Clara Whitted Johnson incorrect and Eli's father was in fact Robert Montgomery, who survived the Revolutionary War?
• Is W.J. Montgomery incorrect and Eli Montgomery was not Robert's son? (perhaps Robert took him in after Levi died in the war)
• Or are these two Elis entirely different people who happened to die around the same time in the same place?
