In 1846, Stewart worked as a wine and spirits merchant in Bandon, a market town in the parish of Ballymodan, County Cork, about 175 miles from Dublin. He was probably employed by his father. He also advertised his skills as a land agent.[3] The Great Famine had begun the year before. Stewart's sister, Anne, had emigrated to Nova Scotia, marrying a customs agent there in 1840. Hester followed in 1851, marrying a friend of Anne's husband that same year. It isn't known whether the horrors of the famine influenced Hester's decision to emigrate. Stewart, as the only son in the family, presumably had no choice but to stay in his hometown.
In 1852, he married another member of Bandon's merchant class, Matilda Allman,[4] the daughter of corn merchant Charles Allman.[5] They had at least two children: Robert, who may have died as a child since only his birth record has been located, and Sarah, who never married.
Stewart died in the summer of 1885,[6] leaving an estate of £474 to his widow.[7]
