Biography
The following information was compiled by descendant Jackson Coleman and sent to me via email:
Until recently Coleman, Walker, Wade, Wright, Ford, Giffin and other related researchers have listed John Coleman from Virginia and wife Mary Ann Walker’s children only. On record are four siblings between 1847 and 1852 all born in district 15 of Knox Co.,Tn. Some time later a second marriage for John was found after wife Mary Ann’s death in 1852. That being the daughter of a neighboring farmer William Wright born 1789 of Virginia. The Wright’s, Simpsons, Walker’s and others all relocated together from Meadville, Halifax Co.,Virginia circa 1830. William Wright’s second born daughter Rosanna A., born 1828, Virginia. John Coleman married Rosanna/Rosa Wright on the 25th. day of 1854, Knox Co.,Tn. It was established that by the 1860 Knox census John was no longer found in the census records. The children from the first marriage with Mary Ann Walker/Coleman, William, Mary, Thomas and Anna were also living with relatives. Second wife Rosa remained in Knox Co. as well and had gone back to her maiden name of Wright. It is unknown at this time what occurred to warrant this action. However a child was born to Rosa A. Wright/Coleman on the 23rd. day of March 1855,Knox Co.,Tn. Recorded as Lithia/Littie E. Wright father unknown on her Death Certificate. A personal note I add here that there be little doubt in the father’s name of John Coleman.
Lettie went on to marry Charles N. Luttrell of Knoxville and have family of her own. Lettie E. Coleman/Wright/Luttrell died 24 October 1944 in Knoxville,Tn. She is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery next to her husband Charley. She had lived to the age of eighty nine and it is hoped she was aware of her Coleman connection.
