Biography

Although Mary Elizabeth 'Betty' McGuffey's father is usually listed as George W. Bridges, DNA says that her father was a member of the Page family of Monroe County, Kentucky. Extensive DNA relationships exist with a specific branch of the Page family and their grandparents.

While Betty's mother Martha Melissa "Melissa" McGuffey may have known George W. Bridges, or had the opportunity to know him since they lived just streets apart in the 1880 census for Centerpoint, Monroe County, KY ^[1], there is no known evidence that George Bridges ever had any relationship with the McGuffey family. Certainly there was never a marriage. Melissa and her daughter (Mary) Elizabeth are listed as 'McGuffey' in the 1880 census.

At some time before 1896, the McGuffey family moved to Tennessee and Betty took the name Bridges. Betty married John Hambright Golden about 1896 per the 1900 Coloma, Cherokee, Alabama census for ^[2] which indicated that they had been married for four years.

Betty's mother Melissa McGuffey would marry Bob Southerland about 1887 per the 1910 census ^[3] for Parsons, Jefferson, Alabama. Betty has a half-brother from this marriage: Willie M Southerland (b1897 TN – aft 1920 KY).
