Matthew Gorton was born in 1742 possibly in Wiltshire, England. He married Elizabeth Tuwey on 1st October 1767 at Broad Blunsden, Wiltshire, were living in Woolstone and had seven children. They were all baptised at Uffington in Berkshire, John 28th February 1768, William 18th July 1770, Martha 19th April 1772, Susannah 3rd April 1774, Matthew 29th September 1776, Edward 3rd January 1779, Elizabeth 3rd June 1781 and Thomas 30th May 1784 aged seven weeks.
