Biography

Daughter of John Henry Hammond and Emily Vanderbilt Sloane. Through her mother she was a member of the Vanderbilt family.

At the age of 14, her family had 30 domestic servants according to the US Census.

She married, firstly, Arthur Duckworth, the son of Arthur Campbell Duckworth and Viola Emily Augusta Margaret Davies-Evans, on 26 March 1927. He later became a British Conservative Member of Parliament from 1929 to 1945. Together they had four children, after which they were divorced and she later married Benny Goodman.

Her brother was Columbia producer John Hammond, who was one of Benny Goodman's closest friends and influenced Goodman's move from Victor to Columbia in 1939. Goodman married John Hammond's sister Alice Frances Hammond (1913–1978) on March 20, 1942.

They had two daughters and raised Alice's three daughters from her first marriage to British politician Arthur Duckworth, from whom she had obtained a divorce. Goodman's daughter Rachel became a classical pianist. She sometimes performed in concert with him, beginning when she was sixteen.

In the 1910 census Alice (age 5) was the daughter of John H Hammond in Manhattan Ward 12, New York, New York, United States.^[1]

In the 1920 census Alice (age 14) was the daughter of Frank Hammond in Manhattan Assembly District 15, New York, New York. Did not transcribe Servants. There were to many.^[2]

Alice applied for a passport on 6 February 1923 in New York, New York.^[3]

Alice, daughter of John Henry Hammond & Hammond, will marry Georg Arthur Victor Duckworth on 26 March 1927 in Orchardleigh Park, Somerset County, England. Ceremony will be at the Byzantine Chapel of St. Bartholomew 's Church.^[4] Alice Hammond got her marriage license on 16 Mar 1927 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, to wed Georg A V Duckworth.^[5]

In the 1930 census Alice (age 23) was the wife of George V Duckworth at 339 Strimey Town, Bush, Williamson, Illinois, United States.^[6]

Sophia, daughter of George Arthur Victor Duckworth & Alice Frances Duckworth, was born on 23 February 1936 in London, SWI, England.^[7]

Alice arrived on 16 February 1933 the ship Manhattan in New York, New York. She was traveling with her children and a nurse for the children.^[8]

Alice died on 4 February 1978 and was buried in Long Ridge Union Cemetery, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States.^[9][10]Alice was in an obituary on 10 February 1978 in Sacramento, California, United States. She died in 1978 on St Martin's Island in the Caribbean.^[11]
