He was killed by a whale on the whaling vessel Leo, his first trip as a captain. "Captain Cash was killed by the first whale struck" - notation on voyage of the ship Leo, 217 tons, which sailed from Nantucket in 1796 with William Cash as captain. - Starbuck, Alexander, History of the American Whale Fishery, from its earliest inception to the year 1876, (Waltham, MA, published by author, 1878, p 192.)
William was the son of William Cash and Mary Johnson. His father was the first Cash on Nantucket.
On 25 Oct 1787 in Nantucket William married Phebe Bunker, the daughter of Simeon Bunker and Mary Swain. To this union were born three children, two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth "Betsey" and son Alexander.
On 6 Oct 1805 in Nantucket, Phebe, the widow of William, married his brother Reuben Cash. Phebe bore three more children.
