Name and dates from the Cairnes pedigree chart received from Ruth Watson. It says: Of Cults, Wigtonshire. Born abt 1580. Settled in Co. Donegal, 1610. Died about 1635.

From Cairnes Book by HCLawlor: Alexander was the only son - and a source of much trouble to his father. In 1595, age less than 18, he was pulled before the Privy Council about his wild and lawless disposition. In 1602 he stole a horse from his father. This and other misadventures of the son caused the father to have to sell the family land that had been in the family 200+ years! In 1603 the father d and the son inherited and sold off the rest of the Scottish lands! For riotous behavior, he was imprisoned in 1606. In 1609 he was a member of the assize. W/no lands in his possession, he seized the opportunity to move to Ireland as general agent to the undertakers in the Baronies of Boylagh and Bannagh in Co. Donegal - 1610. 3 sons living in 1639: John, Robert, David & dau Mary, m to cousin James Cairnes of Claremore.

From Anne Fisher, 2000 - , Doynton, Bristol, UK: 1606 Privy Council Record: "Ryot and oppression....put in ye Tolbooth of Edinburgh....bereft of estates in Scotland". Through influence of Galloway lairds, mostly his relations, he secured an appointment with the colonisation of Co. Donegal and settled there in 1610.
