At the age of 3, her father, John Rider Nevitt, drowned when his schooner capsized in the Choptank River. Her mother remarried within two years and they all moved to Annapolis where her step father, Dr James Murray, was a prominent physician. he cared for many notables including President Thomas Jefferson. At the age of 16, her step father opened a small boarding house called The Annapolis Inn. This is still operating today. This same year, she was painted by Robert Edge Pine who also did many other notables portraits during this time including President George Washington. this portrait has been displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in DC. After her marriage to James Steele, she moved back to Dorchester County. After her husband died, she went back to Annapolis again where lived out the rest of her life. I did find one reference that she accompanied the Marquis de Lafayette in 1824 as he visited the US.
She passed away about 1836.
