His marriage date to Rachel is estimated and is set before the birth of their first child, Rebecca.

1806 Martin is born in Knob Lick, Kentucky.^{[citation needed][1]}

1850 Martin and Rachel are living in Hickman County, Tennessee with their 11 children: Rebecca (19), William (18), Azariah (16), Luther (14), George (13), Susan (11), Racheal (9), Elizabeth (9), John (7), Thomas (4), Alonzo (1). All of the children were born in Tennessee.^[2]

1860 Martin and Rachel are living in Lewis County, Tennessee. They have 12 children living in their household ranging in age from 7 up to 27, all born in Tennessee: Rebecca A (27), William J (26), Anderson (25), Martin L (24), George H (21), Susan (19), Catharine (18), Caroline (18), John W (16), Thomas (12), Edward (10), Mary L (7). Relationships are not given, but given Rachel's age, it is probable that Martin and Rachel are parents to all. Also, there are some name differences from the 1850 Census that need to be researched.^[3]

Research Notes

• There is another Martin Conder who married Ann Catherine Fiscus. He was born in North Carolina ca. 1808 and d. ca. 1848-1850. He was the son of Jacob Conder and does not appear to be a match for this Martin Conder. I have removed Jacob Conder as the father on this profile.

• Notes on Martin's Find-a-Grave memorial imply that his wife Rachel's last name was Anderson. There are apparently other sources somewhere that suggest Rachel's last name was Grimes. So far, there are no sources to support either of those.

• In 1870, there was a Martin Conder (transcribed as "Martin Candor") who was living next door to Eli Conder and his family, which included his wife Mary and two daughters -- Martha and Eliza. Logic would imply that the Martin living next door to Eli and his family would be Eli's father, but the birth info for Martin on the 1870 Census shows 1807 in Kentucky, and that matches with this Martin Conder:^[5] Martin Luther Conder (abt.1806-abt.1877). There appears to be some conflation of the two Martins which is duplicated across several genealogy sites. The two Martins are both descended from Anna Barbara (Schneider) Conder (abt.1741-1790), but one generation apart. • So far, the closest match to Martin and Rachel in the 1870 Census comes with the following household members in Hickman County, Tennessee, all are said to be born in Tennessee, and if it IS the correct household, the birth dates and names are off:^[6]

  • Bellie Condor, F, age 23, est. birth year: 1847 -- probably Elizabeth Conder (abt.1841-)
  • C Condor, F, age 23 est. birth year: 1847 -- probably Racheal Conder (abt.1841-)
  • Louisa Condor, F, age 21, est. birth year: 1849 -- probably Mary Louise (Conder) Wade (1852-1917)
  • Susan Condor, F, age 18, est. birth year: 1852
  • Adaline Condor, F, age 7, est. birth year: 1863
  • Albert Condor, M, age 4, est. birth year: 1866

  The last three children listed on this census do not match up with any of the children we know about for Martin and Rachel. Were they grandchildren?
  
  

  Also, supporting the theory that this is the correct household for Martin and Rachel is the presence of their son William James and his wife Malinda who were living just a household away with their two children.^[7]

• In 1880, Rachel was widowed and was listed as the head of the household in Hickman County, Tennessee with four of their children: Rebecca, Susan, Thomas and Mary L., as well as three grandchildren: Rufus, Amanda and Thomas.^[8]

• According to Find-a-Grave, he died in 1878 in Hickman County, Tennessee (see note at the bottom of his memorial) -- there is no image of his grave marker.^[9]
