Biography

On 27 January 1895 in Corleone, Matteo Salvatore Oliveri, son of the late Salvatore, age 52 (b. 1842), a borgese, living in Corleone, reports the birth of his son on the same date, at #96 via San Michele, to a woman who is not his wife, not a relative. The child is named Salvatore, after his paternal grandfather. Witnesses are Vincenzo Listi, 53 (b. 1841), contadino and Gioachino Leone, 40 (b. 1854), contadino.[1]

He is baptized the next day. Salvatore's godfather is the unmarried Gaspare lo Bue.[2]

Arriving in New York on the Sant’Anna on 4 December 1912, these passengers from Corleone, are a group of young people all labeled farm laborers:

Salvatore's cousin of the same name is the son of a Mafia member, and brother-in-law of Gaetano "Tommy" Reina.

Salvatore Oliveri, age 22, registers for the draft for WWI in Chicago on 5 June 1917. He was born 17 February 1895 in Corleone. He is a laborer employed by E. J. Brach & Sons. He is unmarried and supports his mother. He is of medium height and slender build with brown eyes and dark brown hair.[4]

Salvatore marries Vincenza Marino, who is called Jennie, on 28 September 1919 in Chicago.[5][6][7] They have four children: Salvatore/Sam Jr. (1921), Paula (1923), John, and Philip.

Two months after Salvatore and Vincenza marry, Salvatore's second cousin, Giovanni (John) Oliveri, marries Jennie's sister, Stella. That the two women are sisters is known from the movement of their mother from Sam's household in 1920 to John's widow, Stella's household in 1930.

In the 1920 federal census of Chicago, taken 12 January:

John Olivera, 31 (b. 1889) (second cousin of Sam), heads a household with his wife, Stella, 24 (b. 1895), at 1363 Cleveland Ave. Both were born in Italy. John immigrated in 1910 and his wife in 1913. John is a laborer in a factory.

The next family in the census is at 1361 Cleveland Ave, headed by Sam Olivera, age 25 (b. 1894), who lives with his wife, Jennie, 25 (b. 1894), and mother-in-law Marie Marino, 46 (b. 1873). All were born in Italy and immigrated in 1912. Sam is a laborer in a candy factory. Jennie is a machine operator in a factory. Her mother is a finisher in a tailor shop.[8]

On 1 Jan 1921, Salvatore, son of Salvatore Oliveri, 26 (b. 1895), and Vincenzina Marino, 21 (b. 1900), is born in Chicago.[9]

Paula is born 21 January 1923 in Chicago. Her obituary names her three brothers, who all predecease her.[10]

In June 1928, Sam's brother-in-law, John Oliveri, dies.

Salvatore, known as Sam, is one of two Chicago representatives at the December 1928 Cleveland Conference, a meeting of Mafia bootleggers, of whom twenty are arrested.[11][12]

In the 1930 census of Chicago, Jennie's mother lives with Stella, who is a widow.

Sam and Jennie Oliveri, living at 735 Sanford, appear in the 1937 city directory for Rockford, IL.[13]

Salvatore Oliveri of 735 Sanford, Rockford, Winnebago, IL, registers for the draft for WWII on 26 April 1942. He is 47, born 17 January 1895 in Italy. His contact person is his nephew, Sam Oliveri, at 1332 Sanford St., Rockford.
