We are not certain about the date and place of Thomas' birth. However, in his son's (Eugene Daniel McCarthy's) hand, he wrote that his father was born on 19 October 1858 in Cappamore, County Tipperary (altho Cappamore is in County Limerick).
Thomas McCarthy joined the army in 1878, enlisting in 104th Bengal Fusiliers stationed in Belfast.
At the time of his marriage to Margaret Broderick (age 23) on Feb. 12, 1890, Thomas (age 30) was Colour Sergeant 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment stationed in Warley Barracks.
Thomas retired from the army in 1907 as Seargeant Major 1st Volunteer Battalion, Regimental No 1210,
Northamptonshire Regiment.
