Biography

Daniel John Shaw (1793 -1873) was born about 1793 in Ireland, according to the U.S. Census records for 1850 and 1860. He was the son of Col. John Shaw, a leader of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 who served at the Battle of Antrim in that year.

Exiled from Ireland for its role in the rebellion, Daniel's family moved to New York. His mother arrived in New York City in 1800, with Daniel and his six siblings. Thus Daniel spent his first seven years in Ireland, a year in New York City, and the majority of his youth in Cayuga County, New York, where his father and mother settled ca. 1802.

After serving enlisting in the 13th Regiment of New York State Cavalry during the War of 1812, Daniel J. Shaw was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and eventually became a Major. He continued to serve in the same unit, under the command of Col. Simeon P. Strong, until ca. 1823.

Daniel supposedly "died unmarried, no children," according to several genealogies online. Yet we find what appear to be children on the 1850 U.S. census.

Maj. Daniel Shaw was the owner of Summerhill Estate, the Shaw family estate at Summerhill, Cayuga County, New York, and he is buried nearby in an ornate and beautifully constructed family vault. It was his tribute to a family that he clearly loved very deeply.

Letter of 12 Feb 1812 to William Tennent

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) has preserved many of the letters received by William Tennent, the wealthy maternal uncle of Daniel J. Shaw. This collection contains a letter from Daniel J. Shaw to William Tennent, which sheds some light on the Shaw family ca. 1812.

It is summarized as follows:

PRONI: D1748/C/1/182/6

17 Feb 1812

Letter from Daniel John Shaw, Genoa, New York State, USA.

Thanks Tennent for his letter of 31 August [1811].

Poor Margaret died in July.

William Tennent (Daniel's cousin, the son of Uncle William Tennent) is still here but his resources are virtually exhausted and he shows little intention of getting suitable employment. If money was available which could be given to him sparingly at regular intervals, and some employment procured for him 'remote from any large town', he might prosper.

His father's [Col. John Shaw's] position as a debtor may soon be relieved due to a law soon to be passed by the NY State legislature. At present his father, mother and sisters Ann, Isabella and Maria Jane are all employed on a small farm.

Brother William is employed as a teacher and Robert is in business with a Mr. Samuel Moffat [husband of sister Ann].

Daniel's own situation has not improved a lot since he was 'deceived' in business from a quarter he 'least suspected.'
