Biography

Her father John married, secondly, Jane daughter of John Tey, Esq., of the county of Essex, and Margaret his wife. There was a Marriage Settlement 22 Edward IV (1482). At that time John Tey was already dead and his widow Margeret was of Birch in Essex, and a party to the agreement. It has been proposed that this John must be a member of the Tey family of Brightwell Hall.[1]

By this marriage he had issue :-

  • JOHN son and heir.
  • II. ALICE, wife to Humphrey Kervile, of Wiggenhall St. Mary’s
  • III. MARGARET, who married probably William Skipwith, who is called “my brother Skipwith” in the Will of her brother John.

John Fincham died in 1499, and is buried in St. Martin's church, with Jane his wife, who it appears had married secondly Sir Philip Tilney, Knight, of Suffolk. his will is reproduced in the Fincham book by Blyth.

(However, Alice's son was born about 1495, as shown by his age at her husband's death. And her daughter must have had a similar age given that her eldest son was born about 1511. Alice and her daughter must have been extremely young mothers if the pedigrees are correct, which all imply Alice Kervile née Fincham was born about 1482-1499. From 1482 until 1511 leaves only 29 years for Alice and then her daughter Joan to come of child bearing age. QUERY: Could Alice Fincham have been a child of the first wife, who shared her name Alice and was daughter of Thomas Bedingfield, Esq., of Oxburgh? According to the Fincham book by Blyth, this first wife's marriage settlement with John Fincham was March 3, 1469. Her monument said she died 22 May 1674. Alternatively, might the marriage settlement in 1482 have been later than her parents started having children? Blyth only cites an old Kervile pedigree for saying that Alice Kervile was daughter to Jane Tey.)
