Sophia was born at Headcorn (evidenced by census returns). She was the illegitimate daughter of William Boorman and Eleanor Hosmer, and her birth was recorded at a later date in the register of the General Baptist church at Smarden on the same page as William Boorman's legitimate children. The entry was probably made by one of her mother's brothers who was an officer of that church. Her mother later married William Tribe, and this information was given to me by Michael Tribe who has researched the Hosmer and Tribe families of this area. Sophia married Thomas Hopkins Akhurst at Smarden parish church in 1812. She was baptised there on 02-07-1815 aged 25. They had 5 children. Thomas was killed in Maidstone by highwaymen in 1820 on their eighth wedding anniversary leaving the heavily pregnant Sophia with her young children awaiting his return. (See Thomas's profile for an account of this event.) Sophia had an illegitimate daughter 5 years later, father unknown. The following year she married George Brazier and they produced two daughters. At her second marriage (also in Smarden parish church) she was recorded as Sophia Akehurst, widow. She was buried in 1855 at Tilden Chapel, Smarden.
