Biography

Hypolite and his family lived in the Cecilia area until the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 at which time he moved his family to the Lafayette area. The bank failures in 1929 kept him from ever trusting banks. Until the day he died he never deposited his money in a bank.

Hypolite once owned a dance hall in Cecilia before the Great Flood of 1927. His daughter, Sophie, recalls that her mother (Eulalie) would put the children on the floor on pallets, leave the wooden door open and the screen door closed, and let the children fall asleep listening to the music coming from the dance hall.

When the Great Flood came upon them his wife, Eulalie, snatched the family photographs off the walls and stored them in the attic in hopes of saving them from ruin.

Family stories also tell of the Great Flood as it approached Cecilia. The older members of the family were sitting on the large front porch of their home and the children were all out playing in the yard when a law officer approached and told them to take what they could and leave immediately because a dangerous flood was fast approaching. Eulalie gathered the children and the most needed items and left quickly. Hypolite and his eldest son, Francois, stayed behind to do as much as they could to save their belongings and then joined the rest of the family.

It was also said that Hypolite carried their young son, Paul Domec, out of the floods on his shoulders as the water was chest-high on Hypolite. After escaping the flood waters, the family retreated to an internment camp set up in Scott, Louisiana.

Oral history for Hypolie's Death.

Hypolite suffered a massive heart attack while harvesting potatoes with his children. He died in the arms of of his son Paul Domec. He was 56 years old.

Domec-30 and Domec-35 appear to represent the same person because: I am the great grandson of Hypolite Domec. Hypolite was the son of Jean Francois Domec and Anne Onezia Domec. I have census data, draft cards and U.S. Social Security Death Index information and other records confirming his birth date, place of birth, death date, place of death, burial location, and sibling, spouse & children information.
